Sea Trials and Testbeds (S-100)
S-100 Sea trials and Testbeds
Several sea trials and testbeds have been conducted in the UK, South Korea, Canada, Norway, and Australia to evaluate the different S-100 products.
Canada Sea Trial
The 2025 S-100 St. Lawrence River Sea Trial Area (S-100 Sea Trial) is one of Canada's major contributions to advancing the S-100 universal hydrographic data model. Starting in June 2025, the St. Lawrence River will be a testing area of S-100 products for mariners, developers, and other interested parties.

Norway Sea Trial
The testbed has been conducted in Norway to assess the research project—the IHO S-100 portfolio (S-101, S-102, S-104, S-111, S-129).

Australia Sea Trial
Australia has established an S-100 Testbed Focus Group to develop and test IHO S-100 product prototypes, including S-412 and S-111 services for route monitoring to evaluate planning and decision-making efficiency.
The IHO S-100 testbed is an established framework and infrastructure for testing S-100 product specifications and data quality, while an S-100 sea trial is a practical, ship-based validation of these products and systems in real-world maritime environments to gather user feedback for improvements before official launch. In addition, IHO proposed the test beds are as below:
-
Provide a framework and infrastructure for product specification developers.
-
Receive feedback from relevant stakeholders and provide an opportunity for preparation for their system improvement.
-
Share outcomes of the test bed to meet the IHO M-3 2/2007 resolution
